BCLA Attorney of the Year

Amy M. Romaine is an attorney specializing in family law, personal injury, and probate. Originally from the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon, Amy moved to Florida in 1997 after completing basic training for the United States Air Force. Amy was assigned to Macdill Air Force Base in Tampa as a jet engine mechanic. Amy attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University while serving at Macdill, earning a Bachelor of Science in the Management of Technical Operations in the Aviation Industry. She left the Air Force in 2000 to attend St. Thomas University School of Law and graduated in December 2002.

Amy moved to Brevard County in January 2003 and spent her first two years as an attorney practicing law at a small personal injury firm in Melbourne. She left that position to open her own practice in April 2005 in Viera. Amy's first family law case was a pro bono case. Her client had three minor children that he was trying to take care of, a wife with a drug problem who had walked out, and a HUD home that still had county liens against it. Amy bought a set of family law guides, prepared for her first hearing, and asked her client to wear a suit if he owned one. He assured her that he did. When Amy arrived at court, she found him dressed in mustard yellow from head to toe, wearing patent leather shoes. She nearly died from shock, but managed to tell him that he looked great and proceed with the hearing. That was nearly six years ago and he still sends her a Christmas card every year.

Atty. of the Year, Amy M. Romaine

Amy is always ready for one more case. In the past few years, Amy has represented a dozen Legal Aid family law clients, logging over 200 hours of pro bono service. She is always ready to help with emergency cases, no matter how little time before a pleading is due. In appreciation of her dedication to the needs of Brevard's poor, we are proud to recognize Amy M. Romaine as Legal Aid's "Pro Bono Attorney of the Year."
